On August 19th, 2015 Jake Engel passed away from a heroin overdose. A kind, charismatic, and hardworking member of the Long Island community, Jake’s death was a heart-wrenching blow to a community devastated by drug overdoses and the opioid epidemic. Shortly after his death, a community basketball tournament in his name was created, which raises funds for Hope House Ministries. The event is held at the Cedar Beach Basketball Court in Mt. Sinai where there will also be food, raffles, baskets and music. Hope House Ministries is bringing awareness, community, and change to all people negatively affected by substance abuse. The goal is to create a life affirming, healthy event that people look back on with the knowledge that we can all come together for a greater cause.
